I live 2000 miles from where I grew up. I still have family and friends there. Sometimes I miss everyone so much it hurts. Until I can travel again to my home state of Michigan, I travel on the canvas with one of my birds showing her where I'm from and how my roots run deep.

Last month I spent a day being a beach bum just south of Santa Cruz. I pretty much did whatever felt right for the moment. This including eating, drinking, reading, napping, walking, and photography. I make a good beach bum.

I made a photo of myself while I was there, and from that, I painted this self portrait.
