Gnarly Boots
"Gnarly Boots",
10" x 10", acrylic on canvas, $195

I like to give my students a challenge. It's what keeps them on a steady path of improvement. One of the assignments I give is to have them paint this gnarly old pair of boots. I set them on the table in the middle of the studio and there is usally a round of grimaces, a couple of groans, and even a few deep sighs. I get a chuckle out of this because I know they can do it.

After my students leave, I often paint the assignment I've just given to them. It keeps me fresh, and it gets me back into a painting mode after teaching. So here you have it, my old gnarly boots.

Happy Spring Solstice!

Mary

Student Work

This painting was made by Judith. The assignment was to use dramatic lighting in a painting. She not only achieved the assignment, but the feeling that comes through is especially nice.
