I have had a thing for symbols and pattern-making my whole life. When I was a little kid I liked to doodle on my notebook paper. When I studied photography I enjoyed photographing symbols that were man-made like street signs - YIELD, STOP, CAUTION. I've always enjoyed the patterns of nature - snow drifts, rain hitting water, lone trees.
Some of this doodling is now being incorporated into my paintings on
canvas. The make-believe flowers in the painting above have five sprigs at the top of each blossom. I looked up the number five and how in nature there are very specific things like milkwort, buttercups and delphiniums which have five petals. Well my make-believe flowers now fall into the wonderful world of five.
I am having lots of fun working with symbols, seeing "my" birds creep back into my work and to be creating spontaneously again. Nothing has been worked out in advance - everything you see on the canvas is solved on the canvas.
