Each of these paintings began with a memory or a reflection on childhood. Many include the house I grew up in; a clapboard-sided bungalow. There are recurring elements besides the house, like the maple tree, water, our black cat, Charlie and the kitchen table. I enjoy creating narratives that cause the viewer to wonder what is happening.
Sometimes I paint as a child would paint. If an idea pops into my head I try it out. Some work, some don't. It’s an ongoing give and take and in the process these trials build texture and a rich surface quality.
I primarily use acrylic paint but have no objection to using other materials as well.
